Traditional Indian Bullock Cart (Gari) – Sonnerat Engraving, Paris 1806
This engaging engraving titled 'Gari' (Cart) is plate number 7 from Collection de Planches pour servir au Voyage aux Indes Orientales et à la Chine by Pierre Sonnerat, issued in its second edition in 1806 by Dentu in Paris.
It is part of an important series of plates illustrating Indian life, drawn from direct observation during Sonnerat’s travels in the Indian subcontinent in the 1770s. The scene presents a bullock cart, a traditional form of transportation widely used in India, particularly for long-distance travel and ceremonial processions. The cart is shown with its large wooden wheels, a domed canopy over the passenger compartment, and a richly ornamented yoke. One man sits inside the shaded cabin, likely a traveler or figure of higher status, while the driver, seated at the front crossbar, guides the oxen with reins. The palm trees in the background evoke a southern coastal setting, possibly Tamil Nadu or Kerala, adding a geographic suggestion to the scene. This cart, or *gari*, is more refined than a basic rural wagon and reflects a form of travel that blends utility and prestige. The engraved detail brings out the wooden construction of the wheels, the textile drapery over the oxen, and the posture of both the driver and the passenger. In the context of Sonnerat’s work, this image stands out as a rare European depiction of vernacular transport from late 18th-century India. The plate was drawn by Sonnerat himself and engraved by Poisson, whose name appears at the lower right. These illustrations were designed not merely as artistic studies but as documentary images for European audiences unfamiliar with Indian customs and technologies.
Condition: Good impression with the original centerfold as issued. Slight foxing near the margins and light toning from age. Paper is stable with wide margins and blank verso. Engraved on laid paper with visible chain lines.
Framing suggestion: Owing to its horizontal format and cartographic detail, this piece is ideal for a panoramic presentation. A narrow black or dark walnut frame with an ivory mat and extra width on the top and bottom margins will balance the composition. Ideal for a study or collection focusing on ethnography or colonial-era prints.
