Artists make at least several prints that are meant to be shown to dealers and galleries as examples of his or her work. These prints are called Hors Commerce or Hors d’Commerce proofs, which translated from French means “do not sell” and are labeled with “H.C.” on the bottom of the print. Despite their name, H.C. prints occasionally find their way to the art market where they are in high demand due to their scarcity.

Famed worldwide for giving graphic definition to the postwar age, Saul Steinberg (1914-1999) had one of the most remarkable careers in American art. While renowned for the covers and drawings that appeared in The New Yorker for nearly six decades, he was equally acclaimed for the drawings, paintings, prints, collages, and sculptures he exhibited internationally in galleries and museums.

Steinberg worked for The New Yorker for nearly 60 years, during which time he created almost 90 covers and over 1200 drawings for the magazine. The concept and rendering of this family portrait are a perfect demonstration of Steinberg's sense of the absurd, which was an instrumental part of his work.
