An exquisite 19th-century Chinese hardwood display cabinet, masterfully carved and richly detailed throughout. Crafted during the late Qing Dynasty, this rare piece exemplifies the artistry and asymmetry typical of traditional Chinese scholar furniture.
Constructed from dense, dark hardwood—likely hongmu or zitan—the cabinet features an openwork crest with stylized floral and foliate motifs, continuing along the edges in a finely pierced vine pattern. The shelves are arranged in a stepped, asymmetrical format, ideal for showcasing scholar's objects, porcelain, or fine collectibles.
Each shelf is bordered with carved fretwork and raised on miniature cabriole legs, giving the impression of nested altar tables—an elegant nod to classical Chinese aesthetics. The lower section includes a beautifully carved single-door cabinet with bamboo relief, alongside a drawer and additional display tiers. The entire piece rests on claw-and-ball feet, adding further sophistication.
