Grand Tour Patinated Bronze Figural Sculpture
It is a bronze representation of the Seated Hermes, also known as "Hermes at Rest" or "Resting Hermes". The original bronze statue was discovered in 1758 at the Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum. The statue became highly celebrated after its discovery and was frequently reproduced, especially as "Grand Tour" souvenirs in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The sculpture portrays Hermes (known as Mercury to the Romans), the Greek god of messengers and travelers, in a moment of repose, seated on a rock with his characteristic winged sandals.
