About Tenaya Lake: Ansel Adams visited the shores of Lake Tenaya circa 1938 and made this photograph. He had been there before, guiding Edward Weston to virtually this same spot a year prior during the latter’s Guggenheim Fellowship in 1937. Ansel had visited the region over several years and considered it one of the most beautiful places in the Sierra. The lake later became a rallying cry for Ansel and the conservation movement as he, joined by Sierra Club President David Brower and others, campaigned against the reconstruction of the Tioga Road near the lakeshore and surrounding granite slopes.
About Half Dome & Clouds: This negative was made in Yosemite National Park in 1940. It is a fairly rare print. It is strikingly beautiful and an excellent complement to the Tenaya Lake lithograph.
About Ansel Adams: Ansel Adams is the most important American landscape photographer of the 20th century. He is the most widely known and respected of all American photographers, whose legend continues through books and television documentaries, and through the prevalent reproduction of his work on calendars, posters, postcards, and other ephemera. Adams' professional life was dedicated to capturing the forgotten and unspoiled wilderness of America's national parks and other protected conservation areas in the West. He was a committed environmentalist and nothing short of an icon for the 20th-century conservation movement.
