Rare, untouched, unforgettable—this is the one collectors talk about long after it’s gone.
This exceptional copper fish weathervane, measuring 25 inches in length, is strongly attributed to J.L. Mott Iron Works of New York, ca. 1880–1895. Crafted in swell-bodied form with repoussé scale work, incised gill line, and flared tail, it reflects the refinement of one of New York’s premier late-Victorian workshops.
The surface retains a superb untouched verdigris patina, layered in hues of deep green and copper with subtle blue undertones. A period bullet strike near the base recalls the rural practice of target-shooting barn-top vanes, its upward trajectory authentically confirms the weathervane's placement high possibly on a barn. Unlike many examples that have been heavily cleaned or refinished, this vane preserves its original surface with integrity.
Equally rare, the piece retains its original cast-iron directionals, now mounted on a reclaimed 1890s barn wood base for display. This survival enhances attribution and historical completeness, elevating the vane from architectural ornament to sculptural Americana.
