This tin weathervane depicts a boldly profiled ox, a form mimicked with the prestigious Harris & Co.. This vane represents the transitional era of American weathervane production before mass-produced copper repoussé molds became standard after the 1880s.
Tin vanes were produced in smaller numbers and were highly vulnerable to weathering, making intact 19th-century examples exceedingly scarce today. This example retains its full-bodied silhouette with correct horn, leg, and tail placement.
Most strikingly, it displays a beautiful surface patina with traces of original yellow paint glowing beneath a weathered looking oxidation. Sits on reclaimed wooden stand.
