Excellent Pre-Owned Condition. Pristine.
This beauty is quite the rarity. I acquired it many years ago from a private collector who was downsizing to move into a smaller home. As I am now in a downsizing mode, it’s looking for a new home, might that be yours? George Duncan's Sons & Co. debuted pattern No. 28, Teepee aka Nemesis, in 1896. The company set out to make glassware that had the look-and-feel of elegant cut glass and excelled in doing so. This pattern, Teepee, is a fine example of their work with its elegant cut glass look that consists of deep cuts of strawberry diamonds, fans and crosshatching that form a pattern of overlapping triangles that make up a total of four “teepees”. The short pedestal base has a 28-point ray on the bottom. Crafted from EAPG, color is clear with high brilliance and clarity. Random inclusions that are original to the manufacturer and typical of glass from this era are present but indiscernible. It measures 9¾” x 4½” H/D (height with lid on); height with lid off 6½”; circumference 19”; weight 3.6 lbs.
Elegant art-like piece in its appearance, a look that will complement any tablescape or countertop in today’s modern home. If you’re an EAPG biscuit jar collector or a Duncan glass enthusiast, this beauty is the perfect add to your collection.
Thanks for looking!
Brief History on Duncan Glass
In April of 1874, George Duncan and his wife Agnes formed George Duncan & Sons, in partnership with their sons James and Harry and their daughter Susan N. Duncan Heisey (son in law was Augustus Heisey of Heisey Glass circa 1896-1957) on the south side of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The factory was located just two blocks from the Monongahela River, which provided easy and cheap access, by barge, for the sand, silica and potash needed to make glass. James became head of the firm in 1877 when George Duncan died. In 1891, US Glass Company formed a trust by the merger of several glass companies. Duncan joined this union but the association ended in 1892 when the plant was destroyed by fire. Both James Duncan and Augustus Heisey decided to leave US Glass and pursue separate interests. In 1893, James, his brother Harry and John Ernest Miller, who had been supervisor of the Pittsburgh Duncan factory mold shop, formed a partnership and established, George Duncan's Sons & Co. in Washington, PA, about a half hour south of Pittsburgh. After James died in 1900, John Ernest Miller became a full partner and the factory became Duncan & Miller (1900-1955).
