Heavy-gauge copper, untouched patina, and a century of rooftop service—eagles like this almost never stay on the market for long. The kind of authentic survivor serious collectors move fast to claim.
This distinguished eagle weathervane, ca. 1885–1910, was crafted in the manner of J.W. Fiske and other Boston makers. With a 24-inch wingspan and 17-inch body length, it is modeled in a spread-wing pose, talons clutching a 13-inch circumference spun copper ball. Weighing 5 pounds, its heavy-gauge construction reflects superior quality uncommon in later reproductions.
The workmanship includes a pronounced lap-solder seam, lathe tooling lines on the ball, and finely articulated feather and claw details, hallmarks of Boston-school craftsmanship. The untouched verdigris patina blends olive, brown, and deep green, with a small historic dent at the ball (see image) and two near wing hairline seam splits (see images) that attest to its long and authentic outdoor service.
Mounted on a natural black walnut block (10 × 10 × 3 in.), the vane is stabilized and elevated for display, pairing weathered copper with period-appropriate hardwood.
