In the portrait of her head Sappho almost appears as a negative image, much like the Turin Shroud, while behind her head there is a web of Mediterranean colour representing her frame of mind . There are many questions arising from this thoughtful depiction based on the apocryphal story of Sappho plunging to her doom from the sheer cliffs of Lefkada. Monks performed this act as a leap of faith, Sappho is said to have done it for love and died in the attempt. Use of pigments are key to this painting and its interpretation can perforce only be personal.
