About the Artist:
"Lois Fink Wyka was was born in Cedarville, Iowa on Aug. 26, 1921, to Oscar and Nellie Fink, one of several children (nine to 12, depending on the account). In the 1920s and 30s, the family lived in a small two-story brick house at the southeast corner of Harrison and Cherry, across from the general store owned by Glen and Flossie Bear and later by Jesse Purdue. In the 1960s, Ruth Garr and her husband added an addition; the house still stands.
By 1940, the artist lived in Freeport, and in 1943 she married for the first time. By all accounts, Lois was charming and vivacious. She worked in a laundry at that time, and while her husband was in service, she studied to be a beautician, later working in two Freeport salons. In 1953, she bought the Kurll-Mor Beauty Shop in Rockford and by 1971, she opened a shop in In Aurora, also where she enrolled in her first painting class. She took other classes, began to exhibit her paintings, gain recognition and taught painting classes herself in the Freeport area. The record is cloudy as to the number of her marriages, perhaps four or five, but she adopted Wyka, the last name of one of her husbands, as her artist signature.
In 2000, she married well-known Freeport insurance agent Victor Duray, whom her relative called the love of her life. Lois died at age 90 on May 12, 2013, leaving behind a legacy of her artwork."
