Item description:
Wonderful, large wine flask, vase similar to a large majolica bottle decorated in blue on a white background, classic Savona decoration, made in the second half of the 17th century by the Guidobono family, specifically by Bartolomeo Guidobono, decorated with a central fortress and surrounding landscape, all in ultramarine blue on a white background. On the back are the initials of the decorator "BG," Bartolomeo Guidobono.
Useful information for evaluating the object:
Bartolomeo Guidobono is an important Savona artist, painter, and ceramist. From a web search, we find that the four highest prices achieved for his paintings range from €60,385 to €216,389, for very, very large paintings. We then found one of his plates, in blue on a white background, offered at a Cambi auction with an estimate of €1,000-2,000. Finally, in the last photo, we have included two details of a plate showing a fortress in the distance and foliage, both very similar to those on our large flask. The signature is also almost identical to the one on the back of the vase.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Raised in a family of master potters, his father Giovanni Antonio worked at the royal court of the Savoy family and was ordained a priest on February 25, 1679, after completing his ecclesiastical studies in his hometown. It was in Savona that Bartolomeo Guidobono, known as "Il Prete di Savona" (The Priest of Savona) or "Prete Bartolomeo da Savona" (Priest Bartolomeo from Savona), began his painting career by frescoing the Crocetta chapel at the sanctuary of Nostra Signora della Misericordia. In his hometown, he also painted the fresco on the ceiling of a room in Palazzo Gavotti, depicting The Chariot of the Sun and other deities. His acquaintance with the illustrious painter Domenico Piola, godfather to his brother Domenico, led him to frequent the historic workshops and painting schools of Genoa where, according to some hypotheses, he learned styles and techniques that he later developed in his personal "body of work." After completing the frescoes at the sanctuary in Savona, he made several study trips to Parma (where he met Parmigianino and Correggio) and Venice until his transfer in 1680 to Genoa for a new artistic commission in the salon on the second floor of Palazzo Rosso. He moved to Turin in 1685, where he painted several works in the abbey church of Santa Maria di Casanova in Carmagnola and in the Royal Palace (History of the Savoy) in the apartments of Madama Felicita. Returning to Genoa between 1689 and 1690, he painted the frescoes on the vault of the gallery of Palazzo Centurione, another room in Palazzo Rosso (Fucina di Vulcano) and the chapel of the gallery with the work Historia di Daniello. In the Genoa area, he painted the altarpiece of Le anime purganti (The Souls in Purgatory) (1697-1698) in the church of San Giovanni Decollato in Montoggio and the Circoncisione (Circumcision) (1699) in the church of San Giorgio in Moneglia. The final phase of his painting career was once again linked to Turin and the Savoy royal family, where he moved in 1705 with his brother Domenico and executed several works in the Royal Palace, the convent of San Francesco da Paola (Visione di San Francesco da Paola) and the dome of the church of Nostra Signora del Pilone. He died in Turin in 1709 at the age of 55. In his hometown, in addition to a municipal street, a secondary school in the city has been dedicated to the painter since 1963.
