The scene depicts the fierce engagement at sea, with numerous warships engaged in combat, cannon fire erupting from the vessels, and the turbulent waters reflecting the intensity of the battle. In the background, the city of Havana is faintly visible, reinforcing the location of the engagement near the Cuban coast. The ships are shown in great detail, capturing the grandeur of 17th-century naval warfare and the might of the Dutch fleet as it intercepts the Spanish ships, known as the "Honduras vaerders," laden with treasure. This engraving was used as an illustration in *Frederick Hendrick van Nassauw Prince van Orangien: zyn leven en bedryf*, a book published by Jodocus Janssonius in Amsterdam in 1651. The print was marked in the upper left with "Fol. 37," corresponding to its placement in the book. The work provides a vivid depiction of a key moment in the Eighty Years' War and the broader struggle for control of global trade routes during the early 17th century. See less
