McKenney and James Hall. Lithographed and hand-colored after a painting by Charles Bird King, this plate was issued in 1838 and remains one of the most iconic visual records of 19th-century Native American leaders. Chono Ca Pe is portrayed with immense dignity and ceremonial detail. He wears a traditional feathered headdress featuring a prominent red plume, indicative of his authority and status within the Otoe tribe. See less
