The plate is part of the zoological section of Voyage de la frégate La Vénus, a French scientific expedition around the world published in Paris by Gide in 1846. The upper fish is the Marbled Moray, a long, slender eel with intricate mottled brown and gold markings along its body. Known for its sinuous movement and reclusive habits, the moray is a nocturnal predator typically found hiding in rocky crevices in tropical and subtropical reefs. Its wide-open mouth and needle-like teeth are characteristic of the species, portrayed here with exceptional anatomical accuracy. Below it is the Panther Catshark, illustrated with its thick body, large pectoral fins, and the characteristic mottled pattern from which its name is derived. The *Cestracion pantherinus*—now more commonly placed under different classifications—is one of the earlier scientifically documented rug sharks. This print reflects the growing European interest in cartilaginous fish during the age of marine discovery. This plate is labeled “Poissons Pl. 10” and was drawn by Werner, engraved by Madame Delarue Rognard, and printed by Bougeard. It showcases the elegance and scientific rigor of mid-19th-century natural history illustration. The blend of decorative appeal and biological precision made these expedition prints highly valued in their time—and even more so today among collectors and scholars. The *Voyage de la Vénus* (1836–1839) was one of the grand exploratory missions organized by the French government, combining navigational, scientific, and ethnographic research. The natural history illustrations from this voyage remain among the finest examples of early marine zoology in print. Condition: Very good condition. Some minor scattered foxing in the margins and slight edge toning. Strong plate impression and clean hand coloring. No tears or repairs. Framing Tips: This print is particularly striking when framed in a dark wood or black frame with a neutral ivory or light grey mat. UV-filtering glass is recommended to protect the delicate hand-applied color. Suitable for display in marine-themed interiors or natural history collections. See less
