After the French painter, Hubert Robert, this oil on canvas painting from the 1800s depicts a beautiful and peaceful scene vertically. The artist did a wonderful job of capturing the time of day (sunset), as noted by the yellow, orange, and gray hues of the cloudy sky. Also, the placement of the shadowy trees is quite adept, naturally leading the viewer’s eye to the classical architecture in the forest clearing. This method of painting is sometimes described as an “ideal landscape”, where the darker foreground is framed with trees to further illuminate the detailed scene behind the canopy.
The large building with colonnades and a detailed pediment is flanked by stone steps that lead down to a grassy area where three women are cavorting. A solitary man, sitting on a stone wall that is capped by two sphinxes, watches the women. Two more figures can be seen at the top of the steps beneath a large sculptural grouping of three figures atop a column.
Hubert Robert was an 18th-century French painter who fell into the school of Romanticism. He was well known for cappricio paintings that depicted seemingly out-of-place and sometimes derelict architecture within a detailed landscape. Robert‘s use of dilapidated buildings earned him the nickname “Robert des Ruines”.
