Offered here is an incredible solid marble 1930s desk accessories set: A double inkwell with pen rest, and a matching rocker blotter. Incredibly, the 4-piece ceramic inserts (two pieces for each well) are all present, and all in fantastic condition - very rare indeed!
When I turn these marble pieces to the light, I can see some tiny flecks of what seems to be old yellowed sealant. I suspect when it was first manufactured, it was sealed with some sort of thin, glossy varnish to protect it from being stained by any ink drops. That protective coating has long since worn off - these pieces are now matte, raw marble. If you want to actually use them, they will need to be treated with some kind of stone sealant to prevent staining.
As for the blotter, here's how it works: twist the handle to loosen the two lower pieces, then swivel the rocker bottom sideways. Wrap the blotting paper strip over the curved part, folding the sides up and over the ends. Then swivel the rocker back in line with the rectangle piece. Twist the handle to tighten the two lower pieces so that the loose ends are held in place between the two lower pieces.
It seems incredible that, not only did these two pieces make it through the decades together with their fragile ceramic inserts intact, but tucked within the blotter was an unused piece of blotter paper! Being nearly 100 years old, it is very thin and fragile, so I did not unfold it. But I am including it as part of this listing.
Footprint of the inkwell & pen rest measures about 9 1/2" X 6 1/2". The rectangular part of the rocker blotter measures about 5 1/2" X 2 3/4".
No chips, cracks, or unusual wear to the inkwell, the ceramic inserts, or the rocker blotter. There is an ink stain on the marble down inside the cavity where one of the ceramic insert sits - see close up photo. (Of course when the ceramic insert is in place, the stained marble underneath it cannot be seen). This set is absolutely lovely - a true survivor.
