Item description:
Delightful majolica ceramic box, entirely hand-crafted on a potter's wheel and featuring a gilded bronze ball knob on the lid. Made in full Art Deco style, dating from around 1920-1930, the box is flattened and rather wide, with a trapezoidal section and a flared base finished in pure gold. The interior is glazed with a beautiful, thick, compact cobalt blue enamel, richly vitrified in a second firing. Externally, however, the box is enamelled with a base of powder blue enamel with a matt finish and then further finished by hand with white porcelain drips to create a strong orange peel effect. This gives the outer surface of the vase a crinkled and rough texture, a rather complex process with a striking visual effect. Signed under the base with the classic incised signature of the Batignani factory. Beautiful patina covering the entire object, especially under the base, perfectly in line with our dating.
Useful information for evaluating the object:
During our online research, we found a large number of ceramic vases from the Batignani factory, most of them decorated with flowers and offered at quite high prices ranging from at least €700-800 to over €2,500. This should give you an idea of the value of ceramics from this factory.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Batignani is an art ceramics manufacturer founded in 1907 by Gastone Batignani and based in Bagni di Ripoli in the province of Florence. After the founder's death, his son Renzo took over the management, who in turn handed over the company to Alberto in 1966. Since then, with the help of potters and decorators, Alberto has been producing patinated terracotta inspired by the Florentine cotto tradition, as well as ceramics for interior design and art objects. Production continues today under the management of Leonardo Batignani. This piece has an attribution mark,
