Mandragora officinarum is a species of the plant genus mandrake. Historically, it has been associated with a variety of superstitious practices. This plate originates from: 'the general large historical, judicial, chronological, geographical, and literal name and dictionary, of the gantschen h. Bible. Serving the memorial-pieces of the jews and other antiquities, for the clarification of the h. Scripture \. Now translated into the low german, admirably enlarged, and enriched with remarks, by matthew gargon.' and it's additons: 'by-vowel to the general capital \. Name and dictionary \. And now translated into pure low german, curiously increased, and metv notes enriched, by jakob van ostade and arn. Genr. Westerhovius.', by augustines calmet, published in leiden, amsterdam, by samuel luchtmans, r. & j. Wetstein and smith 1725-1731. This is a recognized encyclopaedic dictionary on all aspects of the history, geography and culture of the bible and biblical times. This dutch translation originates from calmet's work in french including: 'commentaire litéral sur tous les libres de l'ancien et du nouveau testament \.', first published in paris in 1707 artists and engravers: made by 'antoine augustin calmet' after an anonymous artist. Made by an anonymous engraver after 'augustinus calmet'. Author: antoine augustin calmet (1672-1757), french benedictine. Translation by: translation by mattheus gargon (1661-1728), a minister in vlissingen. Engravings in this work by a. De putter, f. Van bleyswyk, m. Pool, ph.
