Shown standing in profile on a sandy bank, the bird's elegant proportions and iconic spatulate bill are rendered with naturalistic accuracy and grace. An inset detail of the spoonbill’s bill, viewed head-on, emphasizes the bird’s most distinctive feature—its wide, flattened shape, perfectly adapted for sweeping through shallow water in search of small prey. The overall palette of clean whites, greys, and ochres, contrasted with black legs and pale reddish eye details, reflects the bird’s actual plumage and seasonal breeding features. This work originates from *Nederlandsche Vogelen*, a landmark publication issued in parts between 1770 and 1829 in Amsterdam. It was the first comprehensive ornithological study published in the Netherlands, and one of the greatest natural history publications of the 18th century. The text was authored by Cornelis Nozeman and Martinus Houttuyn, with illustrations, engraving, and hand-coloring carried out by the renowned Sepp family, especially Christiaan Andreas Sepp and Jan Christiaan Sepp. Each plate in the series aimed to portray birds as they appeared in nature, often near life size and within contextually accurate surroundings. The Eurasian spoonbill is a wading bird of the ibis and spoonbill family (Threskiornithidae) found across Europe, Asia, and North Africa. It frequents marshes, shallow lakes, and coastal lagoons, where it uses its unique bill to filter small aquatic animals from the water. Once rare in the Low Countries, conservation efforts have helped re-establish local breeding colonies in modern times. In this historical print, its majestic stance and elegantly crested head plumage evoke both its stately appearance and ecological distinctiveness. This print is a highly collectible example of Enlightenment-era ornithology and Dutch scientific artistry. Its life-size accuracy and compositional balance make it a showpiece in any interior focused on nature, science, or decorative arts. Condition report Very good condition. Strong plate impression with full margins. Light overall age toning consistent with late 18th-century laid paper. A few minor, scattered faint spots, mianly in the margins. Hand coloring remains fresh and delicately applied. No tears, repairs, or staining. Original descriptive text page included. Framing suggestion This tall-format print will benefit from a generous ivory or pale grey mount to allow the elongated form of the bird and bill detail to breathe. A black or dark walnut frame will provide contrast and draw the eye to the white plumage, while preserving a timeless aesthetic. Use UV-filtering museum glass and archival backing to protect this fine hand-colored engraving for future generations. Ideal as a striking centerpiece in a natural history wall or as part of a curated ornithological collection. See less
