The plate is divided into three sections, offering a comprehensive visual examination of this medieval ecclesiastical structure. The lower section shows the richly decorated stone stalls within the chancel, featuring pointed gothic arches, clustered columns, and intricate carved panels. The partially ruined wall above the arcading gives a sense of historical depth and the passage of time. The upper part of the plate is split into two smaller views. On the left (no. I) is a dramatic rendering of the chancel in ruins, with broken walls and gravestones emphasizing its romantic decay. On the right (no. Ii) are several grotesque figures and ornamental carvings found within the church, including angels, animals, and human heads. These details reflect the craftsmanship and imaginative spirit of gothic stone carving. The drawing was made by john carter (1748–1817), a key figure in the gothic revival and an influential architectural draughtsman. The engraving was executed by james basire (1730–1802), official engraver to the society of antiquaries. It was published in 1790 as part of the society's efforts to record and preserve england’s architectural heritage, most likely in the series 'vetusta monumenta'. This print is not only a precise architectural record but also an evocative piece of antiquarian interest, capturing the aesthetic and historical value of medieval ecclesiastical design. Condition report: very good condition. Some general age-related toning. Light foxing and minor edge wear in the margins. The engraving remains crisp and highly detailed. Framing tips: ideal for framing in a dark wood or black frame with a thin gold fillet. Use a warm off-white or pale grey mat to enhance the contrast of the architectural detail and create a classical presentation. Technique: engraving maker: j. Basire after j.
