These prints were published in Stuttgart in 1887 as part of *Der Ornamentenschatz* (The Treasury of Ornament), a major compendium of historical ornament edited by H. Dolmetsch and printed by Julius Hoffmann. Drawing on authentic historical sources, these plates offered artists and architects of the time access to the rich ornamental traditions of non-Western cultures, including that of imperial China. The first print, titled simply 'Malerei' (Painting), presents a series of floral motifs, borders, and panels reflecting the grace and rhythm of Chinese artistic design. Rendered in earthy reds, deep blues, and celadon greens, these patterns feature chrysanthemums, peonies, and abstracted vines—recurring elements in Chinese textiles, wall decorations, and ceramics. The symmetrical and scrolling designs are thoughtfully arranged, allowing for both aesthetic appeal and clear visual study. The second plate, more vibrant in palette, expands into 'Malerei, Weberei, Stickerei und Zellenschmelz' (Painting, Weaving, Embroidery, and Cloisonné Enamel). At the center is a glorious phoenix or fenghuang, surrounded by blooming peonies—symbols of prosperity and rebirth in Chinese culture. Around it are finely reproduced textile patterns, mythological animals, cloisonné-style motifs, and decorative borders in gold, red, green, and turquoise. These were inspired by imperial fabrics, lacquerware, and enamelled metalwork, offering a rare 19th-century Western interpretation of Chinese applied arts. These prints were executed using chromolithography, a high-quality technique that allowed for bold color layering and precise detail. They served not only as visual references but also as artistic tributes to the harmony, symbolism, and formal beauty of Chinese design traditions. Condition: Both prints are in good antique condition, with vibrant, well-preserved color and only minor age-related toning or foxing in the margins. Paper edges are stable and clean, and the reverse sides are blank. Framing Tips: To bring out the rich decorative detail, these prints are best framed with a wide mat in off-white, cream, or subtle stone. A gold, dark wood, or lacquered black frame will enhance the Asian influence while keeping the focus on the artwork. Displayed together as a diptych, these prints offer a sophisticated and globally inspired focal point for interiors blending traditional, eclectic, or chinoiserie styles. See less
