François-Théodore Legras is a French master glassmaker. His childhood spent in a small hamlet, surrounded by nature, in the heart of the Darney Forest, one of the most beautiful forests in France, probably marked and would become a source of inspiration for his creations centered on the fauna, flora, and especially the landscapes of forests and lakes that dot the Ourche Valley. At the age of 20, he joined a glass factory near his hometown as a clerk. At age 24, he left his homeland, the Vosges, to work at the Plaine Saint-Denis glassworks in Saint-Denis, near Paris, where he was hired as a night clerk. Six months later, Legras became production manager, and in 1866, at the age of 27, he became director of the glassworks. He then built a new modern factory and working-class town that, over the years, became an industrial complex of nearly 20,000 square meters. Legras became managing director of Legras & Cie, then of Verrerie et Cristallerie de Saint-Denis. He participated in many national and international exhibitions where he was often awarded prizes. Legras was also in charge of the glassware and crystal part of the 1900 Paris World's Fair.
