The butterfly chair, also known as the bkf, is one of the most iconic designs in 20th-century design history. Its distinctive silhouette instantly adds character and expression to any room without the need for additional furniture or accessories. With its floating lightness and sculptural presence, it has been considered a "throne of interior design" for decades.
the chair's shape is inspired by the wings of a butterfly. A delicate steel frame supports a loosely applied leather cover that gently flexes when seated, conveying a feeling of mobility and lightness—almost as if floating in a hammock. This subtle dynamism makes the chair one of the most comfortable yet minimalist seating pieces of mid-century design.
the model was designed in 1938 in buenos aires by jorge ferrari-hardoy together with antonio bonet and juan kurchan. Just a few years later, knoll international began licensed production in the usa and europe, playing a key role in the worldwide spread of the design. Especially the early, authentic versions from this period, such as the one shown here with a black metal frame and thick black leather cover, are highly collectible today. The perforated edges with leather bands lend the chair a sense of craftsmanship and underscore the charming contrast between industrial austerity and warm materiality.
the butterfly chair is represented in numerous museums and architectural collections and is considered a key piece of international mid-century design. It combines functionality, minimalism, and elegance in a way that makes it a sought-after classic for collectors and design enthusiasts to this day.
condition: this piece is in good, authentic original condition. The leather displays an attractive patina with typical signs of age and wear, yet remains stable and intact. The metal frame shows minimal paint chips and scratches, which underline its authenticity without compromising its structure. Overall, a rare and well-preserved original with a strong appeal.
