Mirror is a striking example of the English taste for chinoiserie during the 18th century. The rectangular mirror plate is framed in an elaborately carved and gilded surround. Frame is decorated with scrolling acanthus, latticework details, and trailing foliate motifs. The cresting features a central pagoda topped with stylized bells, flanked by finely carved Hoho birds (phoenix-like creatures symbolic of longevity, peace, and prosperity in Chinese culture).
