1920s Floral Purple / Lavender Mauve Antique Rectangle Hand Knotted Pile Wool Rug, Circa Date: 1920s. This exquisite example of early 20th-century design captures the transition between traditional Chinese weaving and the emerging Art Deco aesthetic. It is a compelling piece among antique rugs due to its striking color contrast and minimalist composition, perfectly reflecting the sophisticated taste of the era.

The composition employs a dramatically negative space, allowing the rich, dark field to serve as a backdrop for the delicate, stylized ornamentation. Flowering branches and potted arrangements emerge gracefully from the lower corner, reflecting the period's preference for simplified, naturalistic floral rugs rather than dense, all-over patterns. The asymmetry and sparse detailing emphasize the modern sensibility of the design.

The central field is rendered in a deep, saturated shade of mauve or plum, a sophisticated hue that defines the rug's character. This rich tone, highly fashionable during the Art Deco period, creates a luxurious depth, distinguishing it from other purple color pieces of the time. The subtle taupe border provides a necessary grounding contrast to the intense central color.

Hand-knotted from fine wool, this piece exhibits the soft, pliable handle characteristic of high-quality early Chinese production. Its elongated, narrow dimensions classify it as a small scatter size rug, making it an ideal accent piece for defining a specific area, such as a hallway, or providing a sophisticated layer of texture beside a piece of furniture.
