Published as part of Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux de Paradis et des Rolliers between 1806 and 1808, this work was directed by the Dutch naturalist Coenraad Jacob Temminck and illustrated by the talented Jean-Gabriel Prêtre. The sheet represents a magnificent Himalayan monal (Lophophorus impejanus), a bird native to the mountainous regions of Asia and known for its iridescent plumage and regal crest. The engraving showcases the monal in a regal pose, highlighting the intricate layering of its feathers. The deep blue-black tones contrast beautifully with the red facial skin and elegant head crest. The shading and texture of the plumage are meticulously detailed, capturing the natural sheen of the bird’s feathers. A small anatomical study of the beak is also included, a feature commonly found in scientific bird illustrations of the era. Created using the copperplate engraving technique, this print was first etched onto a metal plate, then inked and transferred onto fine paper. Each sheet was subsequently hand-colored with watercolors, ensuring that every print retained a unique vibrancy. These ornithological engravings were treasured both for their scientific accuracy and for their aesthetic appeal, often displayed in the collections of natural history enthusiasts and collectors of fine art. Condition: Good condition with slight toning and minor foxing, particularly in the margins. The colors remain rich, and details are well-preserved. Matting and Framing Tips: A deep-toned wood frame or a black frame with gold accents would complement the dark plumage. Using an archival mat in a neutral or soft beige tone will enhance the artwork without overpowering it. To protect the delicate hand-colored details, museum-quality glass is recommended, if budget allows. See less
