The print is composed of three main sections: a view of the school at wainflete, a latin inscription, and the monumental brass of richard patten, william’s father. At the top, the plate shows an exterior view of 'wainflete’s school in lincolnshire', rendered in fine architectural detail. The school building, with its late medieval gothic features such as crenellated towers and arched windows, was established by waynflete in the mid-15th century to provide education for boys of the region. The middle panel features an inscription from the school bell, reading "ave maria gracia plena", a devotional latin phrase meaning “hail mary, full of grace,” common on ecclesiastical bells and artifacts of the medieval period. The lower half of the engraving is devoted to the 'memorial brass of richard patten', the father of bishop waynflete. Shown in the center is a full-length effigy of patten in a long gown, hands in prayer, flanked by smaller brass details and mourning figures. These include angels, heraldic devices, and architectural motifs from the original memorial. A dedicatory tablet is also reproduced, stating that the tomb was restored by the bishop in honor of his father. This print was drawn by jacob schnebbelie and engraved by james basire. It was published in 1790 by the society of antiquaries of london, most likely as part of vetusta monumenta, a series of engravings documenting england’s ancient architecture and memorials. Condition report: very good condition. Light age-related toning, with faint foxing mostly around the margins. Strong impression with crisp detail throughout. Framing tips: a classic black or dark walnut frame with a wide ivory mount will enhance the architectural and commemorative features. Ideal for a study or library, especially for collectors interested in british educational or ecclesiastical history. Technique: engraving maker: j. Basire after j. Schnebbelie, england, 1790 See less
