Edmond Lachenal (1855-1948) / Raoul Lachenal (1885-1956) - French Studio Ceramics
Interesting and rare ceramic animal sculpture in the shape of a parakeet.
A studio work from the workshop of Edmond Lachenal,
who, with the help of his sons Raoul and Jean-Jacques, is considered a pioneer of French studio ceramics.
Their works can be found in the Louvre in Paris as well as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Edmond Lachenal was fascinated by Asian works and faience and transferred this fascination into his pieces.
His son Raoul, who lived from 1885 to 1956, also created his own works and glazes, but always worked in the same studio with his father. Today, it is difficult to say which piece is by the father or son—it is more likely that it is considered Studio Lachenal.
The parakeet / small parrot offered here shines with its monochrome blue translucent glaze.
The light color of the base body still shines through the blue. The glaze cracks typical of faience create an unusual yet beautiful surface. There are small, manufacturing-related imperfections in the glaze, revealing the light base tone.
