This near pair of wood carving presented on stand was collected from Northern Thailand, late 19th or early 20th century. Such ornaments were used originally to decorate the roof of the transitional buildings in Southeast Asia. They were carved in the lovely Silhouette of Hong bird, a mythical bird of infinite grace. As an auspicious creature, it symbolizes miracles and was widely used as a motif in royal architectural designs in Southeast Asia.
These pair displayed significant and attractive patina that includes old repair. They make a very charming accent pieces for any bespoken interior.
