Small “Thoroughbreds in Profile” – British Art Deco Bronze Equestrian Wall Sculpture, Circle of John Rattenbury Skeaping, c.1925
Subject & Medium
A refined British Art Deco cast bronze wall plaque portraying three bridled hunter thoroughbreds in noble profile. Each head is shown quarter-length, lifted with proud carriage and attentive expression, embodying the poise and stamina of the sporting horse. The relief is executed in solid bronze with a beautifully matured patina, suspended from its original chain. To the reverse, the plaque bears an impressed foundry number “7156”, confirming its early 20th-century casting.
Composition & Technique
This compact relief captures the Art Deco marriage of stylisation and naturalism.
The jawlines, musculature, and flared nostrils are modelled with anatomical precision.
Reins and bridles add linear contrast against the smooth contours of the horses.
A subtly stippled ground provides depth and textural variation.
The bronze surface has developed a warm, variegated patina that enriches both detail and presence.
Though small in size, the composition achieves a sense of rhythm and dignity, giving it a sculptural weight far beyond its dimensions.
Attribution
Unsigned, yet clearly resonant with the circle of John Rattenbury Skeaping (1901–1980). A Royal Academician and one of Britain’s foremost animalier sculptors, Skeaping achieved recognition in the 1920s and 30s for his elegant equestrian bronzes. His works are celebrated for their clarity of form, anatomical accuracy, and lyrical restraint—all qualities visible in this plaque. Collectors of Skeaping and his circle value such works for their craftsmanship and their enduring contribution to the tradition of British sporting art.
