For over 150 years, Mourlot was almost synonymous with lithography, producing work of such excellent quality that it was clear they had attained the height of printing mastery. While the studio closed in 1999, the works and the process established by its inception remain accessible via work such as this. Colophon pages shown for authentication purposes and not included. André Masson (1896–1987) was a French painter, printmaker, illustrator, and writer, closely associated with Surrealism and later Abstract Expressionism. Severely wounded in combat during Wold War I, the trauma influenced much of his later work. He pioneered automatic drawing—spontaneous, subconscious sketching that bypassed rational control. In the 1930s, Masson lived in Spain, where he absorbed Mediterranean themes and classical influences and his works began to mix mythology, bullfighting, and surrealist imagery. During World War II, he fled Nazi-occupied France, settling in New York, where his style influenced artists including Jackson Pollock and Arshile Gorky. Returning to France after World War II, his work became more lyrical and abstract expressionist. Thus, Masson is remembered as a bridge between Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism. See less
