Offered is a column capital of the Corinthian order adorned with lush foliage of acanthus leaves, extravagantly drilled and undercut, includes a few rectangular holes at the base, apparently for attachment of decorative or structural elements, carved out of a solid piece of white marble. Quite a stunning example of Roman architecture, replete with artistic virtuosity and classic tradition. Origin: Roman Empire.Period: 3rd to 4th century C.E.Material: White marble.
Measures: 10 D (6.5 D Base)x 8.25-8.5 H in. [20.96-25.4 D (16.51 D Base)x 21.59 cm].Weight: 36 pounds 7.3 ounces (16kg 520g).
Provenance: Ex-Northern California private collection, 18 September 1975 acquired from Bruce Rogers Antiques, 2147 Union Street, SF, CA. Private provenance available upon request.
