Framed in wood and signed Sarah Holl
Sarah Holl is an innovative mixed media painter and sculptor who has numerous works displayed in public spaces around the Cape and is currently based in Dennis. She originally developed her niche at Scargo Pottery in her work with large scale ceramic installations, which can be found at places like Cape Cod Hospital and the restaurant the Naked Oyster in Hyannis. Sarah spent a brief amount of time at the Art institute of Boston. However, her major influence was time spent as an apprentice with artists such as Sam Feinstein, Cynthia Packard, and, of course, her father, Harry Holl. She shares her passion for the arts on a daily basis by being a mentor for numerous interns, teaching Figure Drawing and Portrait Painting classes at her studio. Sarah’s remarkable work continues to transform as she blurs the worlds of canvas and clay.
Holl told of a discovery she made during a trip to France. “We were riding motorcycles and we stopped at a small café. I looked across the street, and there was one of my grandfather’s war memorials,” she said. “It really startled me to see my grandfather’s work so far from home.”
Geissbuhler also created collages from clay, a form of artistic expression Holl favors in her wall pieces and reliefs. “Both my grandparents influenced me greatly with relief,” Hall said. “That’s all I do — no pots, no bird feeders. I don’t have my grandfather’s patience with little pieces.
“But my grandfather was mainly a sculptor. To carve in stone with hammer and chisel — do you know how much work that is?” One need only stop by the museum’s sculpture garden to see Geissbuhler’s “Figure with two heads” to recognize the magnitude and power of his art.
A major difference between Holl’s art and her grandfather’s is that Geissbuhler did not sell his work.
“I was brought up in [Harry Holl’s] business, and like him, I sell my art to make a living,” Holl said. “Arnold did not approve of that because [he felt] selling taints. It’s hard to sell your work and be really pure.”
