Antique Japanese Edo Period 4-Panel Screen – Cranes, Plum Blossoms, and Magnolia – Gold Leaf
This exquisite antique Japanese four-panel screen, dating to the Edo period, features a serene and elegant composition rendered in mineral pigments on paper with a gold-leaf field, bordered by silk brocade and a wood frame. Originally created as a four-fold screen, it has since been reconfigured into a two-fold format with four individual panels, measuring a total of 69 inches wide and 35 inches high, with a depth of 0.75 inches.
The artwork depicts a harmonious spring landscape: two cranes—symbols of longevity and fidelity—stand gracefully near the center beneath arching branches of a blossoming plum (ume) tree and a magnolia tree, which frame the scene from left and right. The plum blossoms, rendered in soft whites and pale greens, contrast beautifully with the young green leaves of the magnolia, both of which are brought to life against the lustrous gold-leaf background.
Details such as the gently swaying branches, the intertwined floral elements, and the careful positioning of the cranes reflect the artist’s refined sensibility and the Edo-era aesthetic of nature’s fleeting beauty. The upper right bears a Japanese inscription and a red artist’s seal, indicating authorship and artistic lineage.
