Item description:
Huge, majestic bronze sculpture depicting an owl perched on a branch, created by Portuguese sculptor Miguel Fernando Lopez, signed on the back with his artist name MILO, dating from the second half of the 20th century. Mounted on a very fine marble base, made from a thick slab of red granite resting on a second, thinner slab of black Belgian marble. The artistic quality of the sculpture is very high, both in terms of the quality of the bronze used, which is heavy and solid, and in terms of the plastic quality of the work, created with great attention to detail. Note the beauty of the plumage, the head with its retracted beak, two beautiful horn-like feathers, characteristic of owls, the legs, and the branch. The pose in which the animal is depicted is also very unusual, with its head turned almost completely backwards, a characteristic of this type of bird that allows it almost 360° visibility.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
A quick search on the web shows that the four highest results for Milo bronzes sold at auction, all depicting animals, range from €850 to €1,250, plus auction fees of 25-30%. Furthermore, on major online art and antiques sales platforms, such as the Internet, sculptures by this artist are offered at prices ranging from €1,300 to €2,600. This gives an idea of the value of the sculptures by Miguel Fernando Lopez, aka Milo. Considering that he is still a living artist, it must be said that the value of his works will certainly rise in the future, especially when he ends his artistic production, i.e., after his death.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Milo, Miguel Fernando Lopez, born on June 12, 1955, in Lisbon, is a Portuguese artist. His father worked as an antique dealer, so Miquel came into contact with different types of art at an early age and developed a passion for sculpture. He always wanted to join the Portuguese army until he met a girl shortly before graduating in Lisbon. He fell in love with her and canceled his plans to join the Portuguese army. The relationship ended, but it can be considered a very lucky break because Milo decided to stay in Lisbon because of this girlfriend. Sculpture was one of his hobbies, so Lopez decided to study arts and sculpture at a university near his home. Milo also studied abroad for a year in Rome and Venice, where he learned to speak Italian and got to know the lifestyle of the cities, including the exciting nightlife. Back in Lisbon, Milo sold his first sculptures to a German entrepreneur, who was very enthusiastic about them. Today, he is still in contact with his first client and works as a close collaborator with this client's foundry and as a freelance artist. He married a woman named Isabel, who gave birth to his three children, all boys. He still lives in Lisbon. Milo creates animal sculptures, modern art, and nude figures.
