Elegant French tabletop refractor telescope from the early 20th century. It features a circular base or pedestal made of turned wood and a shaft that supports the main body, held in place by two leather straps. The optical tube is cylindrical, made of wood and leather, with polished brass trim on the eyepiece (magnifying lens that directs the image to the eye) and objective (lens through which light enters).

The late 19th and early 20th centuries witnessed a major change in astronomy due to the rise of large glass reflectors and advances in optics. Large, precise reflectors began to be manufactured, designed for high-quality photographs. During this period, astronomy took advantage of technological advances, such as electronic CCD detectors, which improved the sensitivity of telescopes. Larger mirrors were also manufactured, which allowed reflectors to be increased in aperture and aided their durability and preservation. The use of telescopes spread to both professional and educational research, thus laying the foundations for contemporary astronomy.
