An Ormolu & Chantilly Porcelain Encrier. France, Circa 1750. Attributed to Jean Claude Chambellan Duplessis. Most Certainly Retailed By Simon Philippe Poirier.
It combines two luxurious materials: ormolu, which is finely ground, high-carat gold–mercury amalgam applied to bronze for gilding, and Chantilly porcelain, a distinguished soft-paste porcelain produced in Chantilly, France. The porcelain elements, characterized by their delicate, colorful designs, are indicative of the Chantilly porcelain manufactory established in 1730. This factory was known for its imitation of Japanese Kakiemon porcelain, featuring distinctive palettes and intricate patterns. The piece is a functional desk accessory, designed to hold ink and pens. It typically features compartments for inkwells (though covers or inserts might be missing in some examples) and possibly areas for holding quills.
