Item description:
Beautiful porcelain ceramic plate, entirely handmade, a true painting on ceramic, depicting a seascape with a sailing ship docked on the shore being loaded. The background is a tropical landscape. The extremely shiny glaze is very evident, testifying to the use of high-quality lead-rich glazes and feldspars. Made and signed on the back by the "Pozzo Garitta" factory and by the artist, both on the back and on the central decoration, with a signature that is unfortunately indecipherable. Anyone who knows more about this is kindly requested to write to me privately. Datable between 1937 and 1946.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
Searching the web for auction prices for items manufactured by "Pozzo Garitta," we found a small pair of bookends listed at €2,200-2,500, and a plate similar in size and decoration to ours, listed at €800-900. Bear in mind that these are all rather dated auction prices, from 2007 to 2012, so adjusted for inflation, they would undoubtedly be much higher today. Then we found a ceramic vase listed at €800-1,000 by Cambi in Genoa, at the "20th Century Decorative Arts and Design" auction on June 8, 2011, lot number 11, entitled "Bianco - Pozzo Garitta - Albisola. Terracotta majolica vase with marine motif." Bear in mind that we are talking about a starting price, which could rise during the auction and to which auction fees of 25-30% must always be added. All this to give an idea of the importance of the ceramics produced by this manufacturer. A rare collector's item.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
The artistic ceramics manufacturer "Pozzo Garitta" was founded in Albissola Marina by Bartolomeo Tortarolo (known as Bianco d'Albisola) and Umberto Ghersi in 1937. The manufacturer ceased production during the war and was re-established under the name "SOESCO" in 1946, closing definitively in the 1960s. For this reason, we are referring to a vase made between 1937 and 1946, belonging to the factory's early artistic productions. We recall the collaboration with the factory of important Italian artists such as Lucio Fontana and Aligi Sassu.
