literature and references:
claude monet's relationship with fécamp is primarily that of a painter drawn to its dramatic coastal landscapes. While not his permanent home, fécamp, located on the alabaster coast of normandy, was a significant subject for his work.
monet was fascinated by the normandy coastline, which he considered his "heart." he returned to this region throughout his career to paint its changing light and dramatic scenery. Fécamp, with its cliffs, jetties, shingle beaches, and harbor, offered a variety of compelling subjects.
he made at least two documented painting trips to fécamp. In 1868 he rented a hotel room and then a home in fécamp for his family, using the opportunity to paint scenes of the town and harbour. A second visit dates to 1881.
monet wasn't the only artist captivated by the alabaster coast. Other impressionist and landscape painters, such as gustave courbet, berthe morisot, and his friend eugène boudin, were also inspired by the region.
in essence, fécamp provided monet with the raw materials for his art. The town and its surroundings allowed him to explore his central artistic themes of capturing light, weather, and the ever-changing natural world. This piece has an attribution mark,
