It was likely created during the … Read more A unique ceramic platter from Japan, crafted in the mingei style (folk crafts movement). It was likely created during the Shōwa period (ca. 1960–1980) in one of the workshops in Mashiko or Seto, known for producing this type of artistically designed utilitarian vessels.

The vessel is covered with a dark iron glaze (tenmoku), decorated with sgraffito – engravings revealing a lighter base. The free-form rim with handle gives the platter a uniquely decorative and functional character.

Three types of markings are visible on the base:

a deeply impressed rectangular seal – likely the mark of the potter's workshop or name (stylized kanji, perhaps 田中 – Tanaka),

the engraving "GR" – likely the code of the decorator or exporter,

small numbers and a letter ("8, 3, r") – workshop markings typical of studio and export ceramics.

The form and decoration clearly reflect the aesthetics of Japanese studio ceramics of the second half of the 20th century.

Condition: very good minus, slight 3mm glaze loss on the edge.
