Item description:
Spectacular, extremely rare acid-etched blown glass vase, made by the famous and highly important French manufacturer Frères Daum in Nancy. Signed Daum Nancy with the Lorraine cross. Entirely hand-decorated with a lake landscape with trees in bas-relief. Datable to the early decades of the 20th century, between 1900 and 1920, made in France.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
The vases of the Daum brothers are among the most sought-after of all European manufacturers of the early 1900s. There are numerous important auction results. According to our internet research, the four highest prices found on Art Price range from just over €29,000 to just over €66,000, and auction commissions of 25-30% should be added to the hammer price. We also found other vases offered on the Internet for a maximum of €262,000 for a pair of enormous vases, much taller than ours, measuring 150 cm in height, while for vases measuring 37 cm, 22 cm, and 28 cm, the asking prices are €19,000, €31,000, and €76,000, respectively. All this is just to give you an idea of the value of the Daum brothers' vases.
Final thoughts on the object:
The beauty of the vase is undeniable, with its breathtaking color, from the ochre yellow of the upper part to all shades of red, from the darkest to burgundy, medium red, and even orange, in the various layers of the bas-relief lake landscape. The beauty of this work can be appreciated even more by illuminating the inside of the vase, as you can see in the photos. The texture of the outer surface remains rather creamy, compact but slightly porous and rough, clearly showing the strong acid treatment, a very long artistic process necessary to achieve the final decoration. The glass is also very thick and heavy, thicker than Murano blown vases and even Gallé vases, for example, despite the decorative style and working technique being similar. A very delicate and evident patina covers the entire vase and makes it even more beautiful. The vase's unique relief decoration was created by covering it with several layers of pitch, arranged in such a way as to achieve the desired decoration, even with multiple applications of acid, which consumed the glass in some places more than others, and in some places not at all. The red color of the blown glass is obtained by mixing gold oxides into the glass, which is why red and amber glass are the most prized. An important, rare vase that fetches high prices at auction.
