His style reflects early 20th-century modernist tendencies, favoring simplified forms, expressive brushwork, and evocative color. Philbrick sought to capture atmosphere and mood, using composition and palette to heighten emotional resonance. His impasto technique is modern and rich in texture. As both an artist and educator at the Massachusetts College of Art, he balanced technical skill with a modern sensitivity to expression, leaving behind a body of work that bridges representational tradition with modernist innovation.
