"Welsh Coast at Ogmore" by the Sea Original Watercolor
Grey tones dominate this rocky coastal painting by John Addyman (Wales, 1929-2006),
characterized by his use of muted tones, primarily grays, browns, and blues, to create a textured and layered representation of the rocks and the sea. Addyman's technique emphasizes the structure and form of the landscape, breaking it down into abstract shapes and patterns while still conveying a sense of place. The painting is signed and dated in the bottom right corner "John Addyman 1986". Addyman was known for his landscape paintings, particularly of Wales and Suffolk, he worked in watercolor. This piece is consistent with his style, focusing on the natural forms and textures of the environment.

John Addyman was a watercolourist, ceramicist and an influential art teacher in Colchester. A figure in the post-war generation of British artists, Addyman is seen as an heir of John Nash and the tradition of Welsh and East Anglican landscape painting.
Painter, ceramist, printmaker and teacher, born in Wallasey, Cheshire, attending the local School of Art, 1945–9. Was then at Royal College of Art, 1949–52, working for the advertising agency Colman, Prentis and Varley the following year. Then began teaching part-time at Swansea School of Art. Also taught Colchester School of Art, 1956–63; Nottingham College of Art and Design, 1963–7; University of Essex, 1969–70, Trent Polytechnic, 1974–8; and Norwich School of Art, 1978. He moved to Sudbury, Suffolk, in 1967 and was by then closely associated with the area, having a series of solo shows at the Minories, Colchester, starting in 1961; with a major exhibition at Oriel Bangor, 1976; others including Chappel Galleries, Chappel, a retrospective in 2001, with another show in 2005, and Layers of Perception, Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre, Cwmbran, 2004.
Prifysgol Aberystwyth University:
Born in Wallasey and moved to Wales at age 10, John Addyman was an artist whose work analysed and recorded the structure of landscape and its context. His favourite medium was watercolour, but he was adept in many other media, notably ceramic. In 1996 he won the Singer & Friedlander/Sunday Times Watercolour Competition. Wales and Suffolk were his particular inspirations. He was an influential teacher and prolific artist with many exhibitions in Britain and abroad.
Addyman studied illustration under John Nash, Edward Bawden and John Minton at the Royal College of Art. He returned to Wales and taught briefly at Swansea School of Art. He said that he ‘came to life visually in Wales. The impact of the coastal forms of south Wales was immediate and strong.’ In 1955, he joined the staff of Colchester School of Art, later to teach as visitor at Nottingham and Norwich as well as art history at Essex University. While he worked in clay, making large ceramic panels based on Welsh rockscapes, he did not consider himself a potter, but rather someone ‘drawing in clay’.
In 1989, Addyman returned to live and work in west Wales.
