Edward Horace Thompson “Thirlmere & Helvellyn, Lake District” Original Watercolour, c.1925
Subject & Medium
This atmospheric watercolor depicts a sweeping Lake District view in Cumbria, highlighting the still waters of Thirlmere reservoir and the commanding Helvellyn mountain. Painted on paper and dated c.1925, the work is preserved under glass to protect its luminous washes and delicate brushstrokes.
Composition & Technique
Edward Horace Thompson captures depth and drama through his masterful perspective. The lake shimmers with white highlights against deeper tonal passages, while the foreground bursts with vibrant green grasses, purple heather, and a solitary tree rising from the slope. Rolling hills ascend into distant, mist-veiled peaks, with golden light brushing one side of the mountain range. Above, a dynamic sky of clouds and blue openings completes the composition. His nuanced palette of greens, browns, purples, greys, blues, and whites enhances both vitality and serenity. In our opinion this is his finest work.

About the Artist
Edward Horace Thompson (1879–1949) was among Cumbria’s finest landscape painters. Though he began his career in an office, his true passion was painting the Lake District scenery surrounding his birthplace of Seaton. He later established a Cockermouth studio, producing watercolours now held in private collections worldwide. His works have been exhibited at Gladstone & Patterson and successfully sold at major auction houses, with prices reaching up to $4,605 USD.
About Thirlmere & Helvellyn
Helvellyn, the third-highest peak in England, is renowned for its dramatic ridges — Striding Edge and Swirral Edge — and has long inspired poets including Wordsworth and Coleridge. Thirlmere, once a natural twin lake, was transformed in the 19th century into a reservoir serving Manchester. Its encircling fells, such as Raven Crag and Armboth Fell, offer some of the region’s most cherished views. Thompson’s painting stands in the rich tradition of artists who celebrated this landscape.
