Item description:
A wonderful polychrome biscuit porcelain lady, entirely decorated by hand and signed under the base by the French manufacturer Jean Gille, with a blue embossed stamp. The mark, embossed on a blue biscuit stamp, allows us to date the item to the late 1800s, and the evident antique patina present throughout the sculpture is consistent with this dating. The sculpture is very beautiful. Note the beauty of the face and especially the bonnet, as well as the beauty of the clothes, such as the pleated skirt and the bodice with embossed lacing, all decorated entirely by hand with small biscuit drops inside the circles, all in slight bas-relief.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
From our internet research, we have found that polychrome biscuit sculptures like ours are offered on other online art and antiques sales sites at very high prices, ranging from a minimum of €300-400 for smaller, simpler items to over €3,000 for larger sculptures or pairs. For example, we found a polychrome biscuit pair sold for €2,135 (£1,800) by Golding Young in Bourne, Lincolnshire, UK, at the "Collective Sale" auction on 08/28/2024, lot 33, entitled "Male and female in eastern clothing, possibly Turkish." Then we found a single sculpture depicting a court dandy, estimated at €1,500-€2,000 at the auction on July 16, 2025, by Leiloeira São Domingos in Porto, Portugal, lot 69, entitled "Sem título." (By entering the details of the items we have provided into Google, particularly the title of the auction or sale listing in the same language we have used, the date, the lot number, and the auction house or name of the sales website, you will, in most cases, be able to find and view the items mentioned).
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Jean Gille is a French manufacturer founded in Paris in 1845 by Marquis Jean Gille. The manufacturer mainly produces biscuit busts or sculptures depicting ladies, gentlemen, or groups in 18th-century dress, all entirely decorated by hand and of the highest artistic quality, very much in the style of Vion & Baury, another important French manufacturer.
