a magnificent two-handled roman amphora-shaped ceramic vase, entirely hand-crafted on a lathe. The exterior is glazed with black engobe and silver enamel at the mouth, resulting in a matte, slightly satiny finish. The interior is glazed with lead and feldspar, which are vitrified during a second firing. It is finished with two wreaths of rope-shaped friezes in light bas-relief just below the mouth and just above the base. The two handles are the classic roman or greek amphora handles, and are also embellished with an extremely elegant silver line along the rim. Finally, the two main sides of the vase are decorated with a brush tip, featuring a chariot with four horses on one side and a bareback rider on the other. These two figures, while modern and 20th-century in style, are inspired by the classical decorations of ancient rome. Signed under the base "dervta italy" and bearing the catalog number, the trademark of the deruta maiolica cooperative, founded by biagio biagiotti in 1920, which later became part of the cima factory. For this reason, both factories use the same trademarks. Our vase dates to around 1940, with a beautiful patina perfectly consistent with our dating, therefore made by the cima factory. Of all the artists who collaborated with cima, we believe the authorship of our vase is nino strada, whose artistic production often featured vases with equestrian decorations, dark engobe glazes, and classic 20th-century-style decorations.
