Item description:
Beautiful sculpture in vitrified hard-paste porcelain, entirely decorated by hand, depicting an officer of the Scots Guards in uniform from 1815, made by the Capodimonte factory in the first half of the 19th century. Beautiful patina, especially on the bottom, perfectly in line with our dating. This mold was used by several manufacturers, such as Dresden, Potschappel, and Sitzendorf. This is the version made by the Capodimonte factory, much more detailed and elaborate than many of the other factories that produced the same sculpture in the early decades of the 19th century, when the Capodimonte factory acquired the Real Casa Ferdinandea factory, purchasing all its molds, among which this one was probably also present, belonging to a series of military uniforms considered among the most beautiful and sought-after on the art market. The Scots Guards are a regiment founded in 1600. One of the five regiments of the British Army's foot soldiers, they were assigned to the personal guard of the King of England and Scotland. This is the 1815 uniform.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
In our internet research, we found the same soldier, offered on the Internet for $850, but made by the German manufacturer Sitzendorf, not Capodimonte like ours, in the early decades of the 20th century, and therefore much younger than ours. We then found another one, also from the same series, but depicting a different military uniform, made by Capodimonte in the early decades of the 19th century, like ours. In fact, it is much more detailed and much more similar in workmanship and artistic quality to ours, offered at over €1,300 on an online art and antiques sales site. This is both to give an idea of the value of objects similar to ours and to demonstrate how much the quality of a sculpture, the attention to the smallest details, the materials used such as enamels and vitrification, the quality of the decoration and, above all, the age of the object influence its value.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Capodimonte porcelain owes its name to the hilly area of Naples of the same name, where King Charles of Bourbon and his wife Maria Amalia of Saxony founded the Royal Factory of Capodimonte in the first half of the 18th century. In addition to the Capodimonte National Museum, a considerable quantity of porcelain produced by this famous company is also preserved at the Duca di Martina Museum, at the Villa Floridiana, the Filangieri Museum, and the Diego Aragona Pignatelli Cortes Museum. In the last photos, we have included additional historical information on the factory taken from one of our books in French, with many of the marks used, including ours, as noted in the early decades of the 19th century.
