A truly outstanding late 19th century Japanese Satsuma vase dating to c1890.
An unusual and fine spherical shape, the vase decorated with eight relief reserves, each one showing a different design with hand painted colourful flowers, trees and detailed geometrics. Similar detailed decoration above and below a central strap overlaying the reliefs. The overall workmanship is almost certainly some of very best we have ever seen on a vase from Satuma.
Research has only found two other examples in this form with similar reliefs and workmanship. One is held in the Krannert Art Museum in Champaign, Illinois, the other in private hands. The museum indicates that the vase was made specifically for The World's Columbian Exposition, also known as the Chicago World's Fair, which was held in Chicago in 1893.
Excellent condition, the vase is one of a number of pieces that come from a private collection which has been in the same family for many generations and has never been on the market before. We will be exhibiting them over the coming weeks.

Condition
Excellent, some minor loss of gilt through wear. No chips cracks or restoration.
