Description:
Antique Zurich wave cabinet from the second quarter of the 18th century. Cabinets of the same design can be found in the book Zurich and Northern Swiss Furniture on pages 123, 125, 127, and 128, as well as in the book Zurich Furniture on pages 240 and 241. The fact that the cabinet probably dates from around 1730-1750 is due to the design of the cornice. Later cabinets have a simpler cornice, which is usually just a coving with an end piece. The earlier cabinets are much more elaborate in their cornices. Such cabinets are also often offered as Frankfurt cornice cabinets, which I personally find dubious. A sure sign of a Swiss corrugated cabinet is that you can see the pivot point of the hinges, which has the advantage that the doors can be opened very wide. In Frankfurt corrugated cabinets, the pivot point of the hinges is located in the door, which means that the doors cannot be opened as wide as in Swiss cabinets. The interior layout also provides information about the origin. In Swiss corrugated cabinets, the left door is held in place by a bolt in the middle of the door. The lock itself is located on the upright center board that is part of the interior layout. In Frankfurt corrugated cabinets, the left door has a bolt at the top and bottom.
